The Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Preparedness (DSB) has updated its advice: All Norwegian homes should now be prepared to fend for themselves for at least one week. But what does that actually mean in practice? Here is the equipment that will keep you and your family safe.
Why is self-preparedness important in 2026?
The world is more unpredictable than ever. Whether it's extreme weather, cyberattacks on the power grid, or technical failures in the water supply, it's your job to keep your home functioning even when public services are down. A good emergency stockpile It's not about fear, but about security.
1. Clean water: The most important priority
Humans cannot survive for many days without water. The authorities recommend 20 liters per person. In addition to stored water in jugs, you should have equipment to purify water from nature or unsafe sources.
We recommend having both water jugs and a portable water filter. See our selection of water purification equipment and drinking systems to ensure access to clean water regardless of the situation.
2. Food that can be stored (and tastes good)
Emergency food should have a long shelf life and be easy to prepare without electricity. Freeze-dried food is brilliant because it weighs little and lasts for many years without losing nutritional value.
Check out our selection of camp food and rations. Also remember to have an alternative heat source, such as a stovetop or a gas burner, so you can heat up your food if the stove is dead.
3. Heat and light: Don't stay in the dark
If the power goes out in the winter, it will get cold quickly. Wool blankets and sleeping bags are good, but you also need a way to see what you are doing. Good flashlights and headlamps with extra batteries are a minimum.
Explore our powerful lanterns and lighting which is built to withstand harsh conditions. A good lantern is often the cheapest insurance you can own.
Remember the radio: In a crisis situation, a DAB radio (preferably one that can be charged with a solar cell or crank) is the safest source of information from the authorities when the internet and mobile network are down.
4. First aid and hygiene
In case of accidents, a proper first aid kit is essential. You should also think about hygiene; wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and garbage bags are important to prevent illness when the tap water is gone.
5. Tools and communication
A good knife or multi-tool can solve countless problems in an emergency situation. Whether it's opening cans, fixing equipment, or preparing fuel.
We recommend everyone to have a sturdy knife handy. See our bestsellers in knives and tools.
Summary: Start today
You don't have to buy everything at once. Start with the most important things (water and heating) and build your inventory over time. The most important thing is to have a plan before the crisis hits.
