Paintball has become a popular hobby around the world, especially in Norway! The balls used in the game are made with different paint colors, and their contents consist of biodegradable materials designed to break down in nature and wash easily out of clothing. This means the balls have an expiration date, so it’s important to know how to store them so that your paintballs last as long as possible.
How to store paintballs?
We recommend storing them in a dry place at room temperature, between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius, in a room with little light. We also recommend turning the package regularly. Improper storage will reduce their shelf life.
How long do paintballs last?
There are different types of paintballs with different contents, and they also come from different manufacturers. Therefore, their shelf life will vary, but most agree that regardless of the contents (as long as they are made from biomaterials) and the brand, when stored correctly, they will last around 6 months to a year.
Factors affecting shelf life
In general, the balls will last for around 6 months, but sometimes less and sometimes longer. For example, you can check when they were manufactured. If it was over a year ago, the likelihood that they have expired increases and the quality decreases. Have the balls been exposed to sunlight? Have you dropped them on the ground? Did you forget to rotate the package when storing them? Have they been exposed to low or high temperatures? All these factors can affect the shelf life of the balls.
What happens to the balls when they have expired?
You can of course choose to keep using them, but we do not recommend it, as it may affect your gameplay. Over time, the balls may become deformed, expand, or develop dents. This can cause them to get stuck in the marker’s barrel, leaving you having to clean the barrel in the middle of the game! Some balls can harden and not break at all, while others can become very fragile. If the ball doesn’t break when you shoot, the shot won’t count and your opponent is still in the game.
Price and quality
There is no direct link between price and the durability of the balls, but a more expensive rental ball will withstand somewhat more than the cheapest one. What matters most is how you store and keep them. Price has more to do with quality: expensive balls have spent more time in production to make them as round as possible and will therefore shoot better. However, note that balls can vary in fragility regardless of price, so if you have a mechanical marker that is hard on paint, the most expensive balls may be too fragile.
